Process and Methods

Key words that describe our research methods include slow, emergent, relational, epistemic humility, learning and co-learning, reflexive, and iterative. We strive to work laterally and through consensus.

Through this work, we created and have continued subsequently to execute the following process:

  • Gather and collect research that already exists (theses, dissertations, articles, podcasts, and publications); talk to faculty members to identify research leads; and begin creating and curating a repository of archival documents.
  • Consult with researchers at other institutions who have done the work of holding their universities accountable for their histories, in partnership with Indigenous, Black, and POC communities.
  • Engage with community Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and Indigenous staff, faculty, and students to identify memories and oral histories of this place and institution, re-storying what it means for UVic to be here, and envisioning the future.
  • Share and distribute research outcomes.
